Is it because it is the language of commerce?

No, it's the language of the Internet. And the one that billions of people
have been taking in school, starting over 70 years ago.

It's amazing to me how much English has taken over in Western Europe over the last 25 years. Even in Rome, you'd have trouble finding a shopkeeper that spoke English and my French and Italian are passable but nothing to write home about. . Now, everyone speaks it unless you go to some small village. Never been to Eastern Europe but I understand it's largely the same.

I don't think is directly because of Americans or English though. We are culturally close enough with Europeans and speak enough common words that we can usually communicate with each other. It's because of the Chinese. When they stopped being a real communist country and so many of their citizens started to travel, and travel they do, they can speak English only. You go back
Just 100 years and French was the lingua Franca of most of the world.

So in some ways it's an accident of history that East Asia really opened up to the world at the peak of American financial and cultural power. But the dividend we will continue to reap from that is incredible.

Two more months would've made 18 contiguous years at my current employer
had I not been laid off for 7.5 months in 2014. Still burns me because
at the time they told me the work I was doing would no longer exist. It
never did go away and I'm still doing that same work now.

| When is someone going to mention that bleaching does not mean the
| coral is dead, only that the coral polyps, the actual cnidarian
| host and builder of the reef, have ejected the algae symbionts
| from the colony. After some interval, they take on new symbiotic
| algae, often of a different strain or species which is better
| suited to the then prevailing conditions. The impression is
| widely given this is a dying, and is unnatural, and permanent. It
| is none of those. It is how they survive stressful conditions. If
| the stress is long lasted, some coral polyps do eventually die.
| But even these dead skeletons can be, and often are, recolonized.

Schoolhouse Rock was so great - who doesn't remember how to multiply or use conjunctions b/c of them?

Somebody, AZ or Novartis?, just learned that one of their rare disease drugs that costs $18k / dose has an positive effect in a much larger therapeutic area. Now they have to figure out how to reduce the price significantly.
