The reason why the lack of respect is getting silly is because it goes
back to last season, or the season before for that matter.

As of this moment, tonight, Montreal is the only team that has been in the
top-4 of their conference for the last three seasons! Pittsburgh is just
barely outside the line at the moment, but they are the only other team
close to that level of success/consistency.

Montreal did take it on the chin in the play-offs against Ottawa, but
learned and had a nice run last season. If Price hadn't been injured in
game one who know what would have happened?

The fat Montreal is always in the top-4 and gets 0 respect is evidence, to
me, of a clear Hab's bias. Any other team would be getting tons of kudos
for this level of performance/consistency. Leafs fans would likely do
unseemly acts with donkey's it'd make the Leafs as good as the Hab's, but
until then they'll argue the Hab's just aren't REALLY good. Just two-and-a-
half seasons of fluky hockey.

Marty
Marty <martytest2004@hotmail.com>: Jan 31 07:56PM -0600

If you're old school like me, here is a nice simple page to read the Hab's
player stats.

http://espn.go.com/nhl/team/stats/_/name/mtl/montreal-canadiens

I mention it because a while ago TSN decided to update their stats page, I
am guessing for phones. It's a joke. The stats are spread over THREE pages
(can people on phone not scroll or something?), and there are many less
columns. I tried a couple of other pages before finding ESPN. It'sgood
because it has a good stats page AND you can, if you wish, take a quick
look at the schedule or other Hab's news/information. They have a nice
line along the top with the Hab's leaders, and clicking on a player brings
you to a profile page with stats of any type you want to look at. Not
saying it's the best, but after perusing several pages with this bizarre
"only 8-12 players per page" issue that TSN adopted, I know it is better
than a lot of what is out there.

Note - After writing this, I did take a look at TSN again, and seems they
added more columns, but still unforgivably only show 10 people per page.
You also have to hit a scroll right arrow to see the extended stats. I
prefer ESPN's interface where I just click "extended" stats if I want to
see the more meaningless/obscure stats, and it gives a page of those.

Feel free to share your favourite stats page's or hockey resources. It's
weird, I probably used TSN as a main web resource for over a decade, but I
hate their web interface now. Combined with them losing both the national
NHL feeds and the Hab's local broadcasts, they are basically just dead to
me now. Too bad. I did like some of the personalities.

Before the start of the game Shannon and PJ Stock are talking about
Pacioretty. Shannon says something like for the first time in his career
Pacioretty is a complete player playing both ends of the rink.
To quote Barney Frank - on which planet do you spend most of your time?

After the game PJ is getting ready to praise Subban for the game winning
goal assist but he has to start with "even though he's not been having a
great year". Are you that fucking stupid you incompetent ass, or to
borrow Preacher's adjective, you fucking shitnozzle.

Surely to God Sportsnet can do better than this two morons.

"Even though he's not having a great year?" Seriously, is there some
fucking alternate universe that Toronto-based sports commentators are
from, especially when it comes to speaking about Max Pacs? Reminds me of
that article last year where Max was placed on a list of "most overpaid
players on Canadian teams." Ya know, when he actually has one of the best-
value contracts in the league!

PJ must stand for "penis-job", because PJ must be blowing someone to keep
his job. How else to explain that such a stumbling, bumbling hack who
can't string coherent sentences together got hired by two networks to do
national commentary.

I'd tell Quintal that maybe he ought to spend a little more time
worrying about the Bruins and their record of hits and penalties that
for some reason have gone unpunished by the league. Might even ask him
if Jacobs pays part of his salary.

Remember this beaut on Gionta that went unpunished?

I might even ask for an explanation as to why the referees weren't
talked to after that second penalty he got against the rangers for not
fighting. Where is the referee supplemental punishment for that one?

This is more than a PK Subban issue in my books. This is the
anti-Montreal bias that continues to rear its ugly head in the NHL. Fuck
'em. Which is pretty much what I would tell Quintal. "You got a
suspension or something for me? No? Fuck off then", click.

Not enough information here for me to condemn Quintal. Was P.K. singled out for this phone call, or is the league calling all sorts of players to warn them about various things?

But it does make me nervous even if P.K. isn't being singled out. It makes me very uncomfortable when the league starts "centralizing" the officiating process in such an individual- or team-specific way. It's one thing to say "we want a league-wide crackdown on [hits to the head, goaltender interference, diving, whatever]." But when you start issuing directives from headquarters that Team X or Player A should be treated differently, it's problematic to say the least.

It's not necessarily corrupt, but it opens up the possibility of corruption. If you were high up in the NHL, and you wanted to fix games, or tilt the playing field in favor or against one team or another, how would you go about it? Well, you could try to find referees who are as corrupt as you, but that's risky -- somebody could turn you in. But what you can do is use your influence. Constant messages to the referees that Subban is yapping too much, Plekanec is diving, Emelin is making dirty hits, Gallagher interferes with goaltenders too much... while failing to send the same messages about other teams' sins, or at least not to the same degree. The officials get the message that they'd better start changing the way they call those teams and players, or else they'll be downgraded accordingly and lose playoff assignments, etc. Boom -- mission accomplished, and it's all been done more or less in the open.

And more importantly, that same mechanism can work even if there's no deliberate intent to corrupt. Just have someone in charge who is biased for or against a particular team, and he will honestly believe that all those directives he's handing the officials are fair and neutral. Just as good old "Hockey Dad" Colin Campbell honestly believed the officials weren't being fair to his good boy Gregory, who never committed a penalty in his life.

But the league just brushes off such considerations as wacky conspiracy theories. They're all men of integrity, don't you know, and everyone should just trust them, and it's absurd to suggest otherwise. It's not even confined to the NHL. Yesterday Roger Goodell was asked a very good question about how the NFL's investigations can truly be "independent" when it chooses and pays the investigators, and how he as commissioner can be trusted to do a neutral investigation of an owner like Robert Kraft who is one of the folks who pays his salary and specifically one of his closest allies in league meetings. Goodell got all indignant and made sarcastic remarks to the (female) reporter, and huffed and puffed about how the lawyers he hired to do these investigations are men of the highest integrity. But, as any lawyer, and for that matter any halfway intelligent layperson, could tell you, good ethical policies are at least as much about preventing unconscious bias and the appearance of impropriety as they are about preventing outright corruption. We don't allow judges to decide cases involving corporations in which they hold a significant amount of stock, no matter how much integrity we think the judge has. We don't say "oh, well, as long as he PROMISES to be fair, that's good enough!"

But having a monopoly in its sport makes professional leagues arrogant. And it doesn't help that half the hockey media are folks who might want to get jobs in the league again, and the other half depend on access to folks in the business, so nobody ever wants to press too much on these issues. Just us crazy fans with our wacky notions.

Waste of a good jock strap right now. That 3 on one could not have been
played worse than what he did even if he tried to make it look bad. This
kid needs a wake up call.

Eller is starting to look like Rene Bourque 2.0. When he's on his game, he's a first-line quality player who gives you a bit of everything: size, skill, defensive responsibility. Remember when the Eller/Galchenyuk/Gallgher combo was one of the best in the league for a month? But he seems to have long stretches where he's just... going through the motions seems wrong, because I don't think it's laziness, but he's just kind of there.

I looked at some of his advanced stats to see if there was something I was missing, and he's actually decent -- though not great -- on some measures. Not enough to really change my opinion of him.

If I were MB, Eller is a guy I wouldn't be actively trying to move, but he's certainly an asset I'd be willing to part with.

Eller needs to score to be productive since he isn`t much of a playmaker when it comes to setting up his linemates. When he isn`t scoring goals he is not making up for it by collecting assists. I doubt he will be traded unless MB gets an offer he can`t refuse.
