I couldn't stand him, myself, but the show was kind of fun when I
watched it (and that was rarely).

Probably the first show on television that went after sexual
titillation wholesale.

you don't get it. There is no 'reason' we are all supposed to have guns. I certainly wouldn't expect you to have a gun. Nobody is pressuring you to get a gun, so why do you even care? Why would you get one as you clearly don't like guns. I don't like root beer so I don't drink it.

It doesn't matter why someone wants a gun, needs a gun, etc.....if they want one, they should get one. If they don't, they shouldn't get one. What an awesome concept.

What's the number of people who used lethal force with a gun to protect
themselves from a bad guy? I doubt that that number represents "lots"
either, yet that's supposedly a reason why we are all supposed to have guns.

Are you bothered by the fact that about 50 of these accidental shooting
deaths each year involve a child under the age of six? Is 50 dead little
children "lots"?

The U.S. General Accounting Office has estimated that 31% of unintentional
deaths caused by firearms might be prevented by the addition of two devices:
a child-proof safety lock (8%) and a loading indicator (23%). That's ~160
people per year who would be alive if basic safety devices were present on
guns. Is that "lots" of people?

Is 2 million times a year to ward off a bad guy a lot?

I have not found the stats that tell how many were warded off beause
they knew you had a gun and knew how to use it.

So why aren't we free to own shoulder-fired missile launchers? Or each of us our own atomic bomb?

We are. But if those who could afford them bought them, Obie would
issue an Executive Order to give them to everyone on welfare to
legislate equality.

The middle class loses again.

because we are free to own firearms. An atomic bomb is not included in any reasonable definition of such. neither is a missle launcher. One thing is for sure- the left will continue to create red herrings such as this far after we are all long gone.

I first saw her in Chicos FAS commercials. Looks a little like Teri Hatcher around the edges.

As typically happens, not all photos were of her. I saw one of Rachel
Hunter, the original "Stacy's Mom", and Queen Latifah.

A friend of mine from college rose pretty high in state politics and is fairly close friends with Al Gore. That probably gives me three degrees, or four at most, of every well known politician in the US.

In younger days I jammed with Jim Gordon, drummer for Derek and the Dominos, so that's two degrees to Clapton, three to the Beatles.

Oh dear! More shamelessly disingenuous scaremongering. They haven't
produced a shred of evidence that these lesions (I hesitate to call them
tumours because I doubt whether any of them were autopsied to determine
their nature) were caused by radiation from Fukushima (or anwhere else) and
were not the result of, say, chemical pollution. Hell, we don't even know
how old these pictures are. Some people will believe any old nonsense
that's fed to them.

What's your explanation ? The circumstantial evidence says Fukushima.
The tests off the beaches in Ca also suggest it.

When I saw him in TO he was anything but consistent. I think he was good when conditions were good. That's why he was great indoors. In T.O. he was totally out of sorts...having a bad day and letting everybody know about it.

he was the best ball striker since Agassi, if he'd given up the burgers and got a decent coach to set some goals he'd have won 10 or so slams.

Remember seeing him win his 11th title and couldn't believe it that he'd only won 10 tournaments before - he was way, way, way better than that. I'd say a shame, but he looks like a big big star in Argentina and has a great life, so guess that enough.

Yes... he should have won about 30 tournaments (20 being the number that puts you into the upper echelon of ATP players)... and certainly should have done better than make on major final... oh, well, he was something to watch when on his game... incredible off both sides... he certainly put the boots to Federer a few times at the WTF's...

Pure hysteria! Baseless nonsense!

WIPP accepts only the least radioactive waste, rags and plastic bags,
etc. mostly from hospitals where they use radioactive isotopes for
medicine, tracing, etc. Nobody got any measurable amount of radiation
exposure.

The highly radioactive materials remain at Hanford and other sites
where nuclear weapons were developed and constructed. It was
originally to be stored under Yucca Mountain in Nevada, but Harry Reid
killed that.

I like Nadal. But it doesn't change the fact that Nadal hasn't had to face another top flight player who best surface is also clay. Well we all know what this "argument" is all about...

It's about the fact that Rafa had to beat Federer & Djokovic for most of
his slams while Federer had to deal with the likes of Roddick, Baghdatis
and Hewitt...

IMO the clay field isn't weak, nadal is the greatest ever and fed is
no slouch. it just isn't as deep. in the 90s there were lots of clay
specialists, whether they were top 5 overall players or not. don't
really have that anymore. it was deeper. rafa would've beaten em all
anyway.

djok and fed are not weak clay players. just that they couldn't
overcome nadal on clay. it wouldn't call it weak, but there are
definitely not the countless clay specialists who solely prepped/tried
on clay.

Clay specialists are overrated. They play at Estoril & Sao Paulo and
lose at clay masters first round to top all courters.

The strength of the clay field may be debatable, but that it's been weaker than the HC/GC field since the 90s isn't. However bad Roddick/Hewitt were on grass/hard courts by all-time great standards, they were non-factors on clay, with no quality clay specialists in their place at the FO.

The proof is that in the last 10 years, only 3 players have made more than one FO final (Nadal, Fed, Soderling). And Soderling isn't even Roddick/Hewitt level. At the other three slams at least 5 players have made more than one final (a different mix at each, but ALL of them #1 players at some point).

I do not think Nadal had the serious knee injury he wanted people to believe during that 7 month departure, I am sorry, it is what I think based on the facts(i.e. him swinging off boats and jet-skis with the type of injury he claimed to have had.)

> "Rafa

He did have it easy on clay relatively speaking TT. There are no GREAT clay court players in this era, it is the truth. It does not invalidate Nadal's greatness and if Nadal had to contend with some real GREAT clay court players Nadal probably would have won but to say Nadal had GREAT competition from GREAT clay court players (like Borg, Guga, Vilas, Lendl, etc.) is BS and you know it. Djokovic is tough competition for Nadal on clay only because the match-up is a difficult one for Nadal on all surfaces, not because Djokovic is some great clay court player. Djokovic is a good clay court player but not a GREAT one. There is a difference.

both were ancient and during the 2 biggest matches VS them, they were
quite competitive, in fact haas gave away a FO match in the yr fed won

You seem to forget Hewitt only won 2 slams, & in both of those he was a
couple points from losing before the final. He almost won no slams.

This player is of no historical consequence.

And He won, didn't he ? Let me know when the officials called the winner the winner of a five sets grand slam match base on the score of the first three sets ?

Beat Sampras in a grand slam final that is something you won't be able to do in a few million years.

Acclaim for Bergman films is no more than "emperor's clothes" syndrome based purely on style. But no matter how beautifully lit or framed they are, no matter how often they feature fine actors like Max von Sydow, these films at their essence are shit. I don't care how many film critics say Bergman is brilliant, I hate his films, always will, and don't feel the need to defend myself for feeling that way. I will not be bullied with the weight or volume of critical acclaim. Fuck you and your mountain of celluloid rubbish, ghost of Bergman!

Sounds like someone has seen The Seventh Seal...

I've tried to watch it couple of times but got bored after 5 minutes.

I liked Smultronstället (Strawberry something) though... rated it a 7.
Sort of reminded me of quirky old Finnish films.

I admit, I probably gave it one point too much, cause I wanted to
belong... I wanted to be one those people who "get" Bergman. I apologize.

I'm planning on lambasting Academy's irritatingly predictable choices,
that surprisingly disagree with my favourites with a thread named
"Academy of bad taste" or "Fuck the Oscars" or "Screw you guys - I'm
going home". Alternatively I've been considering a thread title called
"OMG - They killed Kenny - (inglorious) BASTARDS!".

Can't wait!

GTY Joe Wurzelbacher mar 140218 16x9 608 Joe the Plumber Finds New Job, Nasty New Nickname

(Moshe Milner/GPO via Getty Images)

Looks like "Joe the Plumber" has landed himself a new job - and a new, unsavory nickname. Just four days into his union job at Chrysler, Joe Wurzelbacher says a co-worker called him a "teabagger."

Wurzelbacher catapulted into the national spotlight in 2008 when he questioned then-Sen. Barack Obama's tax plan. After the encounter went viral, Wurzelbacher became something of a Republican icon, an example of Democrats quashing entrepreneurial spirit. Wurzelbacher campaigned for Sen. John McCain, scored a book deal and even made an unsuccessful bid for the U.S. House of Representatives - all as a staunch conservative.

But his hard-line views apparently aren't endearing him to his new Chrysler colleagues.

In a letter posted Sunday, Wurzelbacher claims that he was taking a smoke break when a co-worker denounced him as a "teabagger" - a term used to deride members of the Tea Party movement (and, as Wurzelbacher points out, a descriptor for certain intimate activities).

"I'm outside on a break smoking a cigarette and right on cue - some guy calls me a 'teabagger,'" Wurzelbacher writes. "I asked him if he recognizes the training we receive in the military in the trades as legitimate, but he didn't seem interested in a serious discussion and just rushed off."

Wurzelbacher contends that Democrats, "who are supposed to so tolerant and enlightened regarding homosexuals," should be lambasted as hypocritical for using what he calls a gay "slur" to describe Tea Partiers.

A vocal opponent of public unions, Wurzelbacher has been called a hypocrite for joining the United Auto Workers Union. But he insists there's no hypocrisy there. Chrysler requires its employees to join UAW, he argues. Besides, UAW is a private union, not a public one, which means that it's the employees, not the taxpayers, who are potentially at risk.

"The employees voted to have it that way and in America that's the way it is," he says.

"Since I became part of the zeitgeist I've been called a sellout many times," says Wurzelbacher. "Yes, I'm a Republican who was cast into the limelight for having the temerity to confront Barack Obama on the question of redistributing wealth... But I'm a working man and I'm working."

I'd rather win more honorably than this, but that 2004 bullshit of bringing knives to gunfights just DOESN'T WORK.

Outrage Over Sexist Remarks Turns Into a Political Fund-Raising Tool

By AMY CHOZICKFEB. 27, 2014

In the past few months, Republicans have called Wendy Davis, a Democratic candidate for Texas governor, "Abortion Barbie," likened Alison Lundergan Grimes, a Senate candidate from Kentucky, to an "empty dress," criticized Hillary Rodham Clinton's thighs, and referred to a pregnant woman as a "host."

Democrats do not just get mad when they hear those words. They cash in.

In fact, they are trying to find even more examples by tracking Republican opponents, their surrogates and conservative news media personalities, then blasting their comments out to supporters to build voter lists and drum up donations, casting aside the well-worn advice to shrug off sexist comments lest they draw attention to gender over issues.

It is proving effective. Emily's List, the political action committee that backs female candidates who support abortion rights, has raised a record $25 million this election cycle. On Tuesday, the group put out an online petition, "Tell the G.O.P.: Pregnant Women Are Not 'Hosts,' " after Steve Martin, a state senator in Virginia, referred to a pregnant woman as the child's "host" in a Facebook message.

"Instead of fearing sexist attacks, we wait gleefully for the next one," said Jen Bluestein, a political strategist who formerly ran communications at Emily's List.

Republicans are trying to counter with their own war over the so-called war on women, saying that sexist attacks cut across parties and pointing to Democrats' criticism of Sarah Palin and other conservative women. "They're exploiting women for their political gain and political playbook," said Brook Hougesen, a spokeswoman for the National Republican Senatorial Committee.

Republicans say that promoting these types of comments is part of a broader Democratic strategy to portray them as out of touch with women in an effort to shift the focus from unpopular issues associated with the Obama administration.

"I'm more than just a set of reproductive organs and I'd like someone to talk to me about how they'll help my pocketbook and keep my health care plan that I like, and Democrats don't have a good response to that," said Katie Packer Gage, deputy campaign manager for Mitt Romney in 2012 who recently started a consultancy to advise Republican candidates about outreach to women. "If I were them, I'd want to turn it into 'Abortion Barbie,' too."

With a record number of women in Congress and dozens more on the ballot, gender-charged attacks -- stoked by the growth of social media and small-dollar Internet donations -- can generate signatures and contributions in an instant. Battleground Texas, a group working to elect Democrats in Texas, for example, quadrupled its Facebook following after posting past comments by the rock musician Ted Nugent in which he had used terms like "fat pig" and "worthless" to describe women. Mr. Nugent has campaigned for Ms. Davis's Republican rival, Greg Abbott.

Ms. Gage said Mr. Nugent and Erick Erickson, editor of the conservative news website Red State, who referred to Ms. Davis as "Abortion Barbie," do not represent the Republican Party.

But surrogates' comments can be effective tools in portraying a candidate as anti-woman, Democrats said. In an email to The Hill newspaper, Brad Dayspring, communications director at the National Republican Senatorial Committee, referred to Ms. Grimes as an "empty dress," because he said she lacked specifics on policies.

The Grimes campaign promptly sent supporters an email titled "Empty Dress" associating Mr. Dayspring's comment with Ms. Grimes's opponent, Senator Mitch McConnell. "Senator McConnell should also know that sexist, offensive remarks will only fire up our campaign that much more," Ms. Grimes wrote in the email, which included a link to make a donation. Mr. Dayspring declined to comment. Allison Ball, a McConnell surrogate, said Ms. Grimes "only cares about sexism when it's politically beneficial."

The turnout among female voters could sway the most significant races this year because, although they outnumber men, women do not vote in midterm elections in the same proportion as in presidential contests. In 2010, 51 percent of female voters chose Republicans, helping the party regain a majority in the House of Representatives. In 2012, women favored Democrats, with 55 percent voting to re-elect President Obama, compared with 44 percent for Mr. Romney.

How female candidates deal with attacks also has implications beyond 2014, particularly if Mrs. Clinton were to run for president in 2016.

In August, Ready for Hillary, a "super PAC" that supports a Clinton candidacy, sent out an email after the Hillary Project, an anti-Clinton PAC, released an online game "that allows viewers to virtually slap the former secretary of state across the face." Adam Parkhomenko, executive director of Ready for Hillary, promptly pleaded for donations. "Instead of getting mad, we should get organized," he wrote in the email to supporters. "That's why I hope you'll make a contribution today." The attack led to a 40 percent uptick in web traffic and online contributions to Ready for Hillary compared with its normal daily average.

Traditional wisdom held that a candidate responding directly could seem abrasive, said Celinda Lake, a Democratic pollster. In 2010, Ms. Lake published a study called "Name It. Change It." that found sexist attacks on a hypothetical female candidate decreased the likelihood of men and women voting for that candidate. But a direct response, rather than making matters worse, made up for that lost ground, and in some cases damaged her male opponent.

The findings were melded into campaign strategy, and by 2012 the approach grew into a fund-raising tool. In 2012, donations to the Obama re-election campaign increased after it spread a comment that Mr. Romney made during a debate about having "binders full of women." And Senator Claire McCaskill, Democrat of Missouri, raised about $1.4 million in a week after her opponent, Todd Akin, used the term "legitimate rape." Additional donations came in after Mr. Akin compared Ms. McCaskill to a dog playing "fetch" in Washington.

"It comes down to your ability to not just ride the wave, but create the wave," said Marie Danzig, deputy digital director for Mr. Obama's 2012 campaign and head of creative and delivery at Blue State Digital, which works with Emily's List.

An American Bridge tracker in Missouri was monitoring a local TV station when Mr. Akin made the "legitimate rape" comment. The group promptly sent it out to political reporters and on social media.

Such comments, and the policies they're associated with, helped Emily's List raise a record $37 million and grow its membership to two million from 400,000 in 2012. Last year, Emily's List signed up an additional one million members, a record in an off-election year.

GEORGIA GOVERNOR HAS GENIUS PLAN TO SAVE MONEY: DON'T LET POORS GO TO THE EMERGENCY ROOM
by SNIPY

We've been wondering when we would hit the point where conservatives just stone cold come out and say that the poors should die in the streets on account of how they are poor and today we inched a wee bit closer to that point thanks to Georgia Governor Nathan Deal, who just wishes that the dirty impoverished would stop clogging up the emergency rooms of his state already.

Take it away, you criminally awful dickhead.

Gov. Nathan Deal has often called on Congress to reconsider the Affordable Care Act. But on Monday evening, he pushed his former Washington colleagues to revisit a separate health care law that fewer politicians openly critique.

The Emergency Medical Treatment and Labor Act is a 1986 law that requires hospitals to provide emergency health care treatment to anyone who needs it, regardless of citizenship or their ability to pay. It's provided life-saving care to countless people, but it's also strained hospital resources and turned emergency rooms into the first stop, instead of a last resort, for some.

"If they really want to get serious about lowering the cost of health care in this country, they would revisit another federal statute that has been there for a long time," Deal told a crowd of dozens at a University of Georgia political science alumni gathering. "It came as a result of bad facts, and we have a saying that bad facts make bad law."

We're really struggling with the right way to tell Nathan Deal to shut his fucking face forever, because that is some bullshit. The entire goddamn conservative pushback against Obamacare and any other possible insurance scheme that seeks to cover people who aren't rolling around in piles of money or sucking lifetime health insurance from the government teat because they once served in Congress like one Mr. Nathan Deal is that those people COULD GO TO THE FUCKING EMERGENCY ROOM. If they don't have healthcare, and they can't go the ER, where, exactly, does Deal suggest they go? Haha they go nowhere dummy, unless they are pregnant ladies because emergency care that is only for the host vessels of the preborn is what God probably wanted.

Deal, who long served on a key House health panel, said lawmakers can build in protections for pregnant women and others while tightening access to ERs in other ways. Said the governor:

"I think we should be able in this passage of time to figure out ways to deal with those situations but not have the excessive costs associated with unnecessary visits to the emergency room."

Nathan Deal, we think you should be able in this passage of time to figure out ways to be an actual factual human being and stop trying to murder people for the crime of being poor. Also, we think you should be able in this passage of time to figure out that the way to avoid excessive costs from unnecessary ER visits is to create a goddamn insurance arrangement where people can actually go to doctors instead and be treated, you idiot. This isn't rocket science.

We're sorry your rural hospitals are fucking drowning in debt AND patients because you wouldn't sign on to the Medicaid expansion, but that is not the fault of the poors. That is the fault of you, and if we were the kind of people that wished people ill, we would wish you ill.
